You are standing in front of a brass sign built into a brick wall overgrown with ivy. It says Mary Washington College. You walk beneath the wrought-iron arch and up a steep hill.
The path is overgrown. Birds are singing. Crocuses paint a steep hill purple.
You reach a brick walkway. Girls in matching pastel clothing stroll past. To your right, the path leads to ancient brick dormitories.
Do you follow the girls?
Do you go in the opposite direction?
Join a team conducting top-secret research on a haunted fort.
The town is deserted. Bedraggled Halloween decorations remain on porches, and a single decomposing scarecrow lays where it fell. You walk along the empty street. The heat is oppressive. The humidity is worse.
Worst of all are the signs: TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT. Funny how that wasn't in the job offer. You call your new boss and, after eating lunch, you have two choices:
Do you check out your room?
Do you explore the fort?
Visit an acquaintance who works for Big Tech and has even bigger problems.
Mileva invites you to Augusta, Maine. She's working for Bluebeard now, and you wrinkle your nose. Big Tech at its worst! Mileva says she can't tell you anything unless it's in person.
She meets you at the airport, and you head to her lab. Mileva's anxiety is palpable. You wonder what you've gotten yourself into.
